Omega 3 & Histamine: Connections in the Body

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that the human body cannot produce on its own. Therefore, you should consume them through food, dietary supplements, or even infusions. Oils, in particular, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are especially important for histamine issues.

What are omega-3 fatty acids and what role do they play in health?

Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats and are classified as anti-inflammatory. Omega-6 fatty acids are also polyunsaturated fatty acids. However, in contrast to omega-3 fatty acids, they are considered pro-inflammatory. They are found in histamine-rich foods such as soybean oil, sunflower oil, and nuts. Dairy products, eggs, and meat, especially from factory farming, also contain omega-6 fatty acids. This is because the animals are fed grain and soy rich in omega-6. In this context, a question arises: Are omega-6 fatty acids even good for our bodies?

Leinsamen

Alpha-Linolenic Acid

Alpha-linolenic acid is abbreviated as ALA. This omega-3 fatty acid is found in plant-based foods. Low-histamine sources include rapeseed oil, chia seeds, flaxseed, and flaxseed oil. The DGE recommends 1.5 g of alpha-linolenic acid daily. ALA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.

Would you like to supplement your diet effectively? Our MucosaFit contains, among other things, flaxseed powder as well as selected vitamins and zinc. Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes, while zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. MucosaFit is suitable for a low-histamine, low-fructose, gluten-free, and lactose-free diet and can be easily integrated into daily life.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are marine fatty acids. According to the DGE (German Society for Nutrition), the recommended daily intake is 250 mg of EPA and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids contribute to normal heart function. They are found in low-histamine sources such as fatty sea fish, for example, in salmon, organic grass-fed beef, and organic egg yolks. However, the concentration in fish is higher. In this regard, individual tolerance levels should also be taken into account. Unfortunately, fish oil and algae oil are less well tolerated by those affected by histamine problems.

Plant-based ALA is even converted into EPA and DHA in the human body. However, the conversion rate is only about 2 to 10%. Therefore, it is necessary to consume sufficient EPA and DHA. Anyone who thinks that consuming fish is an easy way to get omega-3 fatty acids should be careful. Eating too much fish can be harmful due to heavy metal contamination (from mercury), even if fish contains some good nutrients. Older and larger fish are more heavily contaminated with heavy metals and have a negative impact on histamine levels, the intestines, and the liver.

Lachs

In connection with heavy metals, zeolite is also frequently mentioned. This natural mineral is known for binding certain substances. Our ToxaFit contains 100% natural zeolite of high quality and is free of unnecessary additives. It is approved as a Class I medical device and is suitable for a low-histamine, low-fructose, gluten-free, and lactose-free diet.

Are only omega-3 fatty acids healthy?

According to the DGE, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be 5:1. Due to the increased intake of omega-6 fatty acids through today's often unbalanced diet of fast food and processed foods, there is often a strong imbalance in the diet. However, it is wrong to think that omega-6 fatty acids are generally bad. It's about the right balance, because an excess of omega-3 fatty acids is also harmful. To a certain extent, we need inflammation in our bodies so that blood can thicken or vessels can constrict. These processes must function to protect against pathogens and to stop bleeding.

How do omega-3 fatty acids help with histamine issues?

Histamine is an inflammatory mediator, so omega-3 fats are useful in an anti-inflammatory diet. They have a host of positive properties that are also supportive of histamine issues. They can have a positive effect on the following areas and complaints:

  • Intestinal mucosa
  • Intestinal bacteria
  • Headaches
  • Menstrual pain
  • Regeneration
An unbalanced gut can quickly worsen or even trigger a histamine problem, as can a hormonal imbalance. This often arises from nutrient deficiencies, including a lack of omega-3 fatty acids. Therefore, it is all the more important to consume sufficient omega-3.
