Milk thistle powder & histamine: meaning and application

Milk thistle, also known as Silybum marianum, can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and features an upright, branched stem. The leaves have a greenish sheen, and the purplish-red flowers are spherical in shape and surrounded by spiny bracts. You can find more information about milk thistle and its potential positive effects for histamine issues in the following blog article.

Origin and characteristics of milk thistle

Milk thistle belongs to the aster (daisy) family and is thus distantly related to sunflowers, daisies, and dandelions.
The flowering season of the milk thistle depends on the region where it grows. In northern areas, it blooms mainly from June to August, and in southern areas between February and December. Generally speaking, the so-called "milk thistle" thrives best in temperate, mild to warmer climates.

As is common for the aster family, milk thistle seeds are spread by the wind, which is why they frequently grow on rubble sites, roadsides, or pastures. For the pharmaceutical industry, however, they are cultivated on a large scale in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and China.

Areas of application for milk thistle

Traditionally, milk thistle is used to support the body in liver detoxification. It is also believed that it can positively influence some digestive complaints such as nausea, a feeling of fullness, loss of appetite, and stomach pain. It is also assumed that it can support the body in promoting bile flow. Milk thistle may even have a positive effect on the skin, as it possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The role of silymarin in histamine regulation

part of the flavonoid family, which can support the body in inhibiting the release of endogenous histamine. Furthermore, flavonoids can contribute to an increased absorption of vitamin C, which can additionally positively influence histamine issues. Silymarin is most highly concentrated in the seeds of the milk thistle. As mentioned above, milk thistle is frequently used to support the body in liver detoxification. Also located in the liver is HNMT (histamine-N-methyltransferase). It is one of the two enzymes responsible for breaking down histamine. Therefore, it is advisable to pay attention to your individual liver health.

Possible side effects and precautions

As a rule, no side effects occur when taking milk thistle powder. The basic requirement for this, however, is adherence to the manufacturer's recommended intake. For people with an allergy to plants in the aster family, consumption is not recommended, as milk thistle, as mentioned above, belongs to this family. If symptoms such as skin rash or digestive complaints occur despite this, it is important to stop or reduce intake.

Other important nutrients in milk thistle powder

In addition to the active ingredient silymarin, milk thistle contains several other special components. It also contains unsaturated fatty acids as well as plenty of protein. Furthermore, Silybum marianum contains some bitter substances, biogenic amines, tannins, and dyes.

Various processing forms

Milk thistle is often found as a tincture, capsule, or tablet. However, it can also be found in dried form for the preparation of a delicious herbal tea. Here, however, it is important to note that the concentration of silymarin in capsules or tablets is often higher than in herbal teas, as the capsules contain the pulverized seeds of the milk thistle, whereas herbal teas use the flowers. These contain a lower concentration of silymarin than the seeds.
