Coffee and histamine: Is there low-histamine coffee?

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in Germany . Especially with caffeine, coffee is often used as a pick-me-up to start the day feeling refreshed. Unfortunately, there's bad news for people with histamine intolerance, as this beverage is not well-tolerated by those affected. But what are the reasons for this, and what alternatives are there?

Coffee histamine

Histamine in coffee

How much histamine is in coffee? (Instant) coffee contains only small amounts of histamine . However, the caffeine it contains enhances the effects of biogenic amines , creating a competitive situation with histamine and the histamine-degrading enzyme DAO. Furthermore, coffee is considered a histamine liberator , causing the body's own histamine to be released in mast cells. This can lead to histamine-related symptoms. Therefore, always find your personal tolerance level and don't overdo it with coffee consumption.

But there's also good news: Espresso is usually well tolerated on a low-histamine diet. This is most likely due to the longer and gentler roasting of espresso beans, as well as the faster brewing process compared to conventional filter coffee. This often makes espresso easier on the stomach , as fewer irritating substances end up in the drink. The still water that is usually drunk alongside it can also improve its tolerability.

Decaffeinated coffee, histamine

Decaffeinated coffee contains very little histamine and, due to the lack of caffeine, is usually better tolerated than caffeinated coffee. However, make sure it is organic and free of chemical solvents .
