Chocolate and histamine: Is there any chocolate that is suitable for a low-histamine diet?

The mere thought of chocolate makes some people's mouths water. There's hardly another sweet treat with so many facets. But is it also suitable for a low-histamine diet?

Chocolate is arguably the most diverse and popular sweet treat of all. It comes in white, milk, nougat, and dark varieties. Besides chocolate bars, people also consume chocolate-covered cookies, pralines, spreads, chocolate drinks, and much more. The sweetness of these treats varies depending on the cocoa and sugar content.

Why avoid chocolate if you have histamine intolerance?

Chocolate itself, provided no soy or other histamine-rich additives are present, contains very little histamine. However, like most nuts, it contains other biogenic amines due to the cocoa , primarily tyramine, phenylethylamine, and tryptamine. All biogenic amines require the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) to be broken down. People with histamine-related symptoms should therefore be cautious when consuming chocolate. If they consume even small amounts of histamine in addition to other biogenic amines, the histamine cannot be properly broken down because the enzyme is needed to break down other amines .

White chocolate is much better suited to a low-histamine diet . However, you should pay very close attention to the ingredient list. Only consume white chocolate.

  • without cocoa, instead with cocoa butter.
  • without histamine-rich additives such as soy or sunflower oil.
Often there are also vegan alternatives without milk, which are usually better tolerated.

The higher the cocoa content in a chocolate, the higher the concentration of biogenic amines it contains. Dark chocolate is therefore considered a histamine liberator. Even milk chocolate already contains a high proportion of biogenic amines.

Histamine-related symptoms can occur after consuming milk or dark chocolate. Even when consuming white chocolate, it's important to always be mindful of your personal tolerance level. Also, make sure that no nuts you are intolerant to are included. Almonds are usually well-tolerated, but even here, your individual tolerance level should be respected.
