Coffee and histamine

Latte, espresso, latte macchiato, or a cappuccino? Coffee is arguably the most popular drink among Germans. But is it suitable for a low-histamine diet? Learn more here at HistaFood.

Coffee and Histamine: Is there low-histamine coffee?

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in Germany. Especially with caffeine, coffee is often used as a pick-me-up to start the day feeling energized. Unfortunately, there's bad news for people with histamine issues, as this stimulant is not well tolerated by those affected. But why is that, and what alternatives are there?

Kaffee Histamin

Histamine in Coffee

How much histamine is in coffee? (Instant) coffee contains only small amounts of histamine. However, the caffeine it contains enhances the effect of biogenic amines, creating a competitive situation with histamine and the histamine-degrading enzyme DAO. In addition, coffee is considered a histamine liberator, which releases endogenous histamine from mast cells. This can lead to histamine-related symptoms. Therefore, always find your personal tolerance level and do not overdo coffee consumption.

But there's also good news: Espresso is usually well tolerated on a low-histamine diet. This is most likely due to the longer and gentler roasting of espresso beans and the faster brewing process compared to conventional filter coffee. In this way, espresso is often gentler on the stomach, as fewer irritating substances end up in the drink. The still water that is usually drunk with it can also increase its tolerability.

Decaffeinated Coffee and Histamine

Decaffeinated coffee contains hardly any histamine and, due to the lack of caffeine, is usually better tolerated than caffeinated coffee. However, make sure that it is produced with organic quality and is free of chemical solvents.

Caffeine-free coffee alternative with No Coffee

If you don't want to give up coffee completely, a high-quality caffeine-free coffee can be a sensible alternative. Especially if you want to reduce caffeine as a possible trigger.

One example is No Coffee. The coffee is naturally decaffeinated, using only water and no chemical solvents. At the same time, artificial flavors and unnecessary additives that could also affect tolerability are avoided.

Since caffeine is considered a potential factor that can influence histamine degradation in the body and promote the release of endogenous histamine, many affected individuals consciously choose decaffeinated varieties.

Additionally, the organic Arabica beans are gently roasted and are naturally low in acid, which makes the coffee more digestible for many overall.

Important: Here, too, individual tolerance applies. It is best to test new products in small quantities and observe how your body reacts.
