Oats and histamine

Good news: Oats are perfect for a low-histamine diet. Plus, you can prepare many different dishes with them. Oats are suitable for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Oats: A versatile, gluten-free grain

Oats contain very little histamine and are therefore very suitable for people with histamine issues. They come in many different variations. Popular oat products include delicate or hearty oat flakesoat yogurtoat flouroat bran, and oat groats. Oats are perfect for starting your day, especially for breakfast as porridge, muesli, or rolls. But oat cream (like oat cuisine) is also ideal for cooking. In addition, oat milk is a suitable alternative to dairy milk. However, the topic of milk is divisive. Most people simply prefer cow's milk in their coffee. The question also often arises as to why oat milk is harder to froth than cow's milk. This is because animal milk contains more fat and protein.

Are oats gluten-free? Oats for celiac disease

Oats are a very popular grain because, due to their low prolamin content, they can even be eaten by those with a gluten intolerance. They naturally contain no gluten. However, due to the manufacturing process, minimal traces of gluten can be present in oats. People who suffer from celiac disease and are very sensitive to gluten should therefore use gluten-free products. Many products manufactured in Germany are marked with the symbol of a crossed-out ear of grain and the note "oats."

The oat plant: Origin and advantages

Oats belong to the sweetgrass family. The plant grows upright and has long roots that can reach up to one meter in length. It has a round and hollow stem. The oat grain itself is found in the panicles, which adhere to inflorescences about 15 to 30 cm long. Sowing takes place in November and December or in February. It then takes another 70 to 90 days until harvest. 1% of the world's grain production consists of oats. Russia cultivates the most oats, followed by Canada and Australia. Poland is the leader in oat cultivation within Europe.

Are oats good for your health? Nutritional content

The grain with the nutty taste is suitable for a healthy diet. It contains many different nutrients, including minerals and vitamins. It is rich in

  • Fiber: approx. 40%
  • Protein: approx. 13.5 g/100g
  • Iron: contributes to the normal function of the immune system and normal oxygen transport in the body
  • Zinc: contributes to normal carbohydrate metabolism and normal macronutrient metabolism
  • Phosphorus: contributes to normal energy metabolism and the maintenance of normal bones
  • Magnesium: contributes to electrolyte balance and normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): contributes to normal psychological function and normal heart function
  • Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine): contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and normal red blood cell formation
Oats contain approx. 56 g of carbohydrates per 100 g. The glycemic index of oats is 40, while that of wheat is about 70. This means that oats cause a less sharp rise in blood sugar levels. Oats are considered a rice and corn alternative because the grain contains much more protein than rice or corn and is also rich in essential amino acids. For example, oat flakes contain 7 g of fat per 100 g. 40% of this fat consists of mono- or polyunsaturated fatty acids.
