Turmeric and curcumin: The power root

Turmeric originates from Southeast Asia and India. It belongs to the ginger family and is obtained from the root of Curcuma longa . Due to its yellowish color, turmeric is also called yellow root, yellow ginger, or saffron root. The curcuminoids it contains give curry its characteristic yellow color.
