Coffee and histamine
Coffee with milk, espresso, latte macchiato, or cappuccino? Coffee is arguably the most popular drink in Germany. But is it suitable for a low-histamine diet? Find out more here at HistaFood.
Coffee and Histamine: Is there low-histamine coffee?
Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in Germany. Especially with caffeine, coffee is often used as a pick-me-up to start the day energized. Unfortunately, there's bad news for people with histamine issues, as this indulgence is not well-tolerated by affected individuals. But why is that, and what alternatives are there?

Histamine in Coffee
How much histamine is in coffee? (Instant) coffee contains only small amounts of histamine. However, the caffeine it contains amplifies the effect of biogenic amines, creating a competitive situation with histamine and the histamine-degrading enzyme DAO. Additionally, coffee is considered a histamine liberator, meaning it releases the body's own histamine from mast cells. This can lead to histamine-related symptoms. Therefore, always find your personal tolerance level and do not overdo coffee consumption.
Decaffeinated coffee and histamine
Decaffeinated coffee contains hardly any histamine and, due to the lack of caffeine, is usually better tolerated than caffeinated coffee. However, make sure that it is produced in organic quality and is free of chemical solvents.
Caffeine-free coffee alternative with No Coffee
If you don't want to give up coffee completely, a high-quality decaffeinated coffee can be a sensible alternative. Especially if you want to reduce caffeine as a potential trigger.
An example is No Coffee. The coffee is naturally decaffeinated. Exclusively with water and without chemical solvents. At the same time, artificial flavors and unnecessary additives, which can also influence tolerability, are avoided.
Since caffeine is considered a possible factor that can influence histamine degradation in the body and promote the release of endogenous histamine, many affected individuals consciously choose decaffeinated varieties.
In addition, the organic Arabica beans are gently roasted and are naturally low in acid, which makes the coffee more digestible for many overall.
Important: Here too, tolerability is individual. It is best to test new products in small quantities and observe how your body reacts.
