Tanghulu – Candied Fruits

Tanghulu are a traditional Chinese sweet made from candied fruit. Warning: Highly addictive!

This recipe is   

  • vegan
  • suitable for a low-histamine diet  
  • gluten-free  
  • lactose-free  

Preparation time   

25 minutes  

Ingredients  

  • 2 cups of sugar  
  • 1 cup of water  
  • Low-histamine fruit of your choice, e.g., blueberries, grapes, blackberries, mango (1)  

Tanghulu preparation  

  • Put sugar and water in a pot and bring to a boil.  
  • Do not stir during the entire process, otherwise the sugar will crystallize.  
  • Continue simmering over medium heat until the sugar turns a yellowish color.  
  • Wash the fruit, pat it dry and skewer it onto wooden skewers.  
  • Prepare in a bowl of ice water  
  • Once the sugar has reached the desired consistency, dip the skewers into the syrup and then immediately into the ice water.  
  • Let cool on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and serve.

You can also color the syrup red, for example, with compatible food coloring or juice, if desired.
