Routines for histamine intolerance
Daily routines are becoming increasingly popular. But what exactly are routines, and what significance do they hold for our health? This blog post is about how to find a suitable routine and integrate it into your everyday life. We know that this cannot be generalized and that it is often easier said than done depending on your life circumstances. That is why we also want to take the pressure off you. Routines do not have to be grand, time-consuming, and certainly not perfect. You and your needs should absolutely be the primary focus.
What does "routine" mean?
A routine is an action that becomes a habit through repeated practice. A specific action thus becomes a matter of course for you and an integral part of your daily life. It takes time for something to become second nature or an automated action. On average, it takes 60 days for a routine to become a habit. And that is a good thing, because you shouldn't just randomly build a routine just to have one. You should benefit from your routine and feel comfortable and good.
It may happen that you start something and it turns out: No, I can't imagine doing this in the long run. Great, that is also very important! Then you look further for what suits you better. Then there is also me-time, which should not be confused with a routine. Me-time is truly just for you – time in which you do something good for yourself. Your routine can include me-time, or vice versa. However, a routine itself is something that should make your everyday life easier. One into which you can, for example, also integrate your children, pets, or other family members. This might take the pressure off if you are thinking "How am I supposed to create a routine when I still have to take care of X, Y, Z?".
To what extent are routines important?
Routines can promote your health
As already mentioned, routines can be simple things, like drinking tea or still water in the morning. These small things, as well as yoga or meditation, can have health-promoting and even histamine-lowering properties. They provide you with energy and allow you to start your day feeling more balanced and strengthened.
Routines help you set priorities
Self-reflection is very important – ask yourself how you are doing today, what is important to you, and what you need today. Feel free to ask yourself this every day. This helps you to structure your day and make it effective, while still paying attention to your needs. The clearer your answer to these questions is, the better the routines can solidify and support you in your everyday life.
Routines liberate
All processes that have become second nature to you no longer take up much space in your thoughts – this saves a lot of energy. You have less baggage in your mind and can organize your day in a more liberated and effective way. That is why it makes sense to further develop habits. The more of them we have, the more space there is for creative processes in our brain. You can save time and money
Because you can better structure and plan your day, you may skip the trip to the bakery and the tea to go, since you have planned to prepare tea for a thermos flask.
Routines can provide a buffer against stress
Your routine is anchored in your mind, which is why a stressful phase will not throw you off track as easily. You are simply more structured and organized. An example of this: One tends to eat less healthily during stressful phases. Due to lack of time, it might end up being a quick frozen pizza, which is definitely not low-histamine, or snacking due to nervousness. This creates a vicious cycle: Stress (not good if you have histamine intolerance) → histamine-rich, unhealthy diet → symptoms caused by the histamine intolerance → even more stress, as the symptoms may restrict you in your further plans. The solution here would be to have already integrated a routine in which you have a meal plan (for example for the weekdays) or simply have recipes ready so that you do not have to invest any time in research. You do not have to make a hungry or frustrated decision in the moment, as you have already made it days in advance.

What kinds of routines are there? – Examples of different routines
The specific question of what routines exist simply cannot be answered. Routines are completely individual; they should fit you and your everyday life.- Planning meals for the week, having recipes ready; possibly pre-cooking/meal prep (more on this soon)
- Setting shopping day(s)
- Waking up early
- Me-time
- Practicing gratitude for a few minutes every day
- Preparing morning tea
- Drinking still water after waking up
- Going for a walk (at a specific time)
- Walking at least 10,000 steps every day
- Stretching after waking up to wake up the body
- Getting some fresh air before breakfast, during your lunch break, etc.
- Watching the sunset
- Yoga, meditation, breathing exercises
Such small things can become habits and have a big impact. Experiment, stick with it as long as it does you good, and establish one routine after another.

How do I manage to integrate a routine long-term?
Each of us is individual and has a unique daily schedule. Some work from home, some are in the office all day. Others have children who need attention and love, as well as others who have, for example, a dog that also needs activity and care. This means: There is no SUCH THING as THE routine. Instead, there is YOUR routine.
As a very first step, you should observe yourself – what routines might you already have integrated into your daily life? From which situations can you develop a routine? What would you like to achieve? What does you good and what does you less good? By the way, you should ask yourself these questions again and again, reflecting on yourself repeatedly. It can help to write down a typical daily schedule and think about how much you actually sleep, how regularly you eat, how much you drink, and how much you move. Then ask yourself the questions already mentioned:
- What routine do I already have and how can I perhaps change/improve it?
- How do I want to organize my daily life? What should it look like?
And then: clear goals, positive affirmations, and stick to it! This is how you implement your plans more consistently:
- unclear: I want to do more sports again.
- better: I will do a round of yoga every Monday and Wednesday at 7 p.m.
- Do I lack the ingredients?
- Do I lack ideas or concrete recipes?
- Is the food too monotonous?
- Is it hard for me to let go of my former, but unfortunately histamine-rich foods?
- Do I always have to cook separately for myself while my family eats something else?
