Detoxifying the liver: Why a healthy liver is so important

The liver is an essential organ that is all too often underestimated and neglected. It is one of our largest organs, weighing approximately 1.4 kg in an average adult. We are all familiar, for instance, with the term "fatty liver," or know that excessive alcohol consumption has a negative impact on this organ. But what other facts should you know? In this blog post, you will learn about the functions the liver performs, the ailments an overloaded liver can cause, and how you can manage to take the strain off your liver.

What warning signals does an overloaded liver send?

Liver overload is only visible in medical tests once the liver has already been suffering for several months or even years. If the liver is overloaded, these symptoms and warning signals may indicate it:

  • Gastrointestinal complaints: If digestive juices are lacking due to insufficient bile acid production resulting from an overloaded liver, digestive tract issues can occur
    .
  • Nutrient deficiencies: The storage capacity of your liver decreases significantly when it is overloaded with toxins. The liver can then no longer adequately store essential vitamins that the body cannot produce itself.

  • Cravings: Carbohydrates are stored in the liver as glycogen. When blood sugar levels drop, glucose can be released into the blood. If the liver is overloaded, hypoglycemia occurs more frequently.

  • Sleep problems: The liver actively detoxifies during the time between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM. If it is overworked, this can cause sleep problems.

  • Exhaustion: An exhausted liver can no longer fully perform its task of metabolizing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. A significant loss of energy is likely.

The symptoms described here should definitely be clarified medically, as they can also be an indication of other disorders and diseases.

Tasks and functions of the liver

The tasks of the liver are diverse. In addition to the detoxification and excretion of harmful substances via the kidneys and bladder, it is responsible for various other functions in your body:

  • Binding and production of blood proteins: With the exception of antibodies for the immune system, the liver produces all blood proteins itself. These are eventually released into the blood, where they perform important functions.

  • Fat metabolism: For energy production, fats (lipids) are broken down and metabolized by the liver. It breaks fats down into fatty acids and degrades them with the help of oxygen or stores necessary fats.
  • Nutrient storage: The liver derives energy from nutrients such as fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Furthermore, it is capable of storing essential vitamins (A, D, E, K) as well as iron, vitamin B12, and copper.

  • Bile acid production: The cholesterol in the liver is converted into primary bile acids and finally combined with taurine and glycine, which produces the bile salts of cholic acid. After temporary storage in the liver, these reach the intestine step by step.

How to create a foundation for a healthy liver

Detoxifying a liver in 3 days is not possible, as detoxification takes time. Alongside the intestines, gallbladder, and kidneys, it is one of the most important metabolic organs. All metabolic organs work together in one system.

The connection between liver health and histamine

The liver contains, among other things, the enzyme histamine N-methyltransferase, which is responsible for breaking down histamine in the body.

Detoxifying the liver: Home remedies and tips

Certain plant substances or zeolite contribute to relieving the liver. This volcanic rock is taken on an empty stomach and before going to bed with a glass of water. Other simple tips that can easily be integrated into everyday life include the following:

  • Drink plenty of water: Since the kidneys and the bladder excrete toxins, it is enormously important to drink plenty of fluids. We recommend 300-500 ml of still water in the morning.

  • Get enough sleep: 7 to 9 hours of sleep are necessary so that the daily fat metabolism gives way to detox mode at night. At night, the body rids itself of toxins and harmful substances.

  • Cook fresh: To take the strain off your liver, a nutrient-rich diet is essential. High-quality and fresh foods provide your body with the energy it needs to function perfectly.

  • Fruits and vegetables: The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends 5 portions of fruit and vegetables daily. About three handfuls of fruit on your daily menu provide your body with phytochemicals. Blueberries, cherries, pomegranate, grapes, melon, apples, or persimmons are rich in phytochemicals and are also suitable for a low-histamine diet.

  • Do not drink coffee: Coffee and caffeinated beverages strain the liver and are not suitable for a low-histamine diet.

  • Take ToxaFit. It contains zeolite and supports the relief of the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
