Unstable cervical spine and histamine intolerance

The causes of histamine intolerance can be as varied as the symptoms themselves.
To achieve long-term improvement of histamine-related complaints, one should, in addition to diet, always look for other potential causes that can increase histamine levels in the body. One of these causes can be an unstable cervical spine (cervical spine instability).

In the case of an unstable cervical spine / cervical spine trauma, the supporting ligaments of the upper cervical vertebrae are usually so severely overloaded and stretched due to an accident (sports, household, car, etc.) that they can no longer fulfill their natural supporting function 100%. The hypermobility can lead to direct contact or a narrowing and irritation of nerves and blood vessels, which can trigger a cascade of reactions. Another factor can be craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD).

The consequences of cervical spine hypermobility can include:

  1. Sympathetic nervous system activation
  2. C-nerve fiber activation and neurogenic inflammation
  3. Cranial nerve dysfunction
  4. Histamine elevation
  5. Damage to brain cells and blood-brain barrier cells
  6. Nitrosative stress

In approximately 50% of cervical spine instabilities, histadelia (histamine elevation) develops, recognizable by pathologically high levels of free histamine.

Typical symptoms of an unstable cervical spine can include, for example:

  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Severe tension
  • Visual disturbances
  • Pain and weakness throughout the body
  • Sensory disturbances
  • Impairments of fine motor skills
  • Autonomic symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, nervousness, hot flashes, and feeling cold
  • and many more.

Possible diagnostic options for an unstable cervical spine include, for example:

  • Functional MRI (Upright MRI)
  • Functional X-ray
  • Functional CT
  • DMX (Digital Motion X-ray)
  • Physiotherapists / Osteopaths (cervical spine specialists)

Possible therapy recommendations include, for example:

  • Avoiding shocks and further overstretching
  • Osteopathy
  • Targeted muscle strengthening (cervical spine specialists)
  • Micronutrient therapy
  • CMD treatment
