Histamine intolerance and mental health
In recent years, there has been a steady increase in mental illnesses, as shown by the Statista infographic "Sick Psyche: Record High in Absenteeism in 2020" from 2021. From 2000 to 2020, the number of sick days due to mental illnesses per 100 insured persons with DAK more than doubled. According to the RKI, more attention must therefore be paid to mental illnesses and their treatments. In this blog post, we want to focus on the connection between histamine intolerance and the human psyche.
What is a mental illness?
- Anxiety disorders
- Unipolar depression
- Disorders due to alcohol and drug use.
Causes of a mental illness
A mental illness usually does not have a single specific cause, but rather arises from a symbiosis of various causes. The following factors play a major role:
- biological (e.g. developmental biological, genetic and neurochemical factors)
- psychological (e.g. trauma and learning experiences)
- social (e.g. education and caregivers)

According to the Statista Global Consumer Survey "When the head causes difficulties" from July/August 2021, the Corona pandemic also exacerbated existing mental problems in 35% of the 2,071 people surveyed in Germany. Stress and mood swings are the most common symptoms since Covid-19, closely followed by depressive phases and phases of sadness.
Histamine and psyche: Is there a connection?
Can psychological problems such as anxiety disorders and panic attacks arise from histamine intolerance and can existing psychological complaints be exacerbated by histaminosis? The answer is a clear YES. And there's a simple reason for that: Not only your gastrointestinal tract is affected by histaminosis, but your entire central nervous system is influenced by the neurotransmitter histamine, including your brain and your psyche. This is because histaminosis is a metabolic disease, i.e. a metabolic disorder. In addition to common symptoms such as migraines, sleep and concentration disorders, the following psychological symptoms of histamine intolerance are therefore also possible:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Mood swings
- Concentration problems
- Nervous agitation
- Fatigue
- Aggression
- Irritability
ATTENTION: Therapy with antidepressants is counterproductive in the presence of histamine intolerance, as the medication does not combat the causes, but can additionally restrict DAO function and cause histamine release. If medication is pending, be sure to inform your treating doctor/psychiatrist about your histaminosis.

Anxiety and panic due to histamine: The brain is the key
Especially with a histamine problem, a balanced supply of important micronutrients is useful. Our BalanceFit combines carefully selected vitamins, minerals and plant substances. Vitamin B6 contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function. In addition, folate and vitamin B12 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. BalanceFit is vegan and suitable for a low-histamine, low-fructose, gluten-free and lactose-free diet.

Histamine intolerance symptoms and psyche — our conclusion
Histamine intolerance and psyche condition and influence each other. Therefore, it is essential that you pay attention to your mental health and reduce stress. Targeted breathing exercises or meditations can positively influence your psyche by calming the mast cells in the brain through stress reduction.
