Histamine intolerance and weight problems

The topic of weight plays a significant role in relation to histamine intolerance. The same applies to stress, which is usually inseparably linked to histaminosis and can lead to weight problems, among other things. Do you also have histamine problems and struggle to maintain your weight? Then feel free to read this blog post.

Histamine and Weight

Stress causes the human body to store fat out of fear of falling into a period of hunger after a crisis. During this time, the craving for junk food also increases. In stressful situations, people tend to consume foods that lead to water retention in the tissues and thus to weight gain. However, the opposite can also be the case: weight loss as a result of the human body no longer being able to digest food. And what does all this have to do with histamine?

Histamine Intolerance and Weight Gain

What is the connection between histamine and weight gain? The neurotransmitter histamine is produced by white blood cells and mast cells in response to particular allergens, stress, and cold temperatures. This histamine release, in addition to symptoms such as hives, itching, shortness of breath, watery eyes, and a runny nose, also leads to water retention and swelling.

This happens due to an imbalanced gut and an overloaded liver. Unfortunately, we humans tend to develop cravings for precisely those things to which we are allergic. In the case of histaminosis, one can speak of a histamine-allergy-addiction cycle that crashes every diet.

If you want to specifically support your liver as part of a balanced diet, our MetaFit could be a sensible supplement. It contains choline, which contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function, as well as vitamin C from acerola and selected bitter substances.

On the one hand, the additives in histamine-rich foods and beverages promote our feelings of happiness at the moment of consumption; on the other hand, people crave precisely these chemicals that the body produces as a result of consumption. The increased heart rate due to histamine release leads to a state similar to that caused by adrenaline release.

The human brain produces opioids after consuming high amounts of sugar and fat. However, this feeling quickly subsides, and the body craves the same high, i.e., more sugar and fat (cravings). According to a long-term study, the most addictive foods are
  • certain types of flour
  • fats like sunflower oil
  • wheat
  • sugar
  • artificial sweeteners
  • caffeine.

All foods either contain a lot of histamine, cause histamine release, or lead to reduced DAO production. Furthermore, it has been scientifically proven that compulsive eaters, like alcoholics, suffer from sensitivity and a reduced number of dopamine D2 receptors. It is therefore obvious that the hormone dopamine should be increased by certain foods.

Pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have a similar effect to histamine-rich foods. Both substances cause stress in the human body, as it is busy repelling the toxin. As a result of the burden, histamine is released, which in turn leads to weight gain and swelling. To counteract weight gain, a low-histamine diet and avoidance of pesticides are therefore advisable.

INFO: It is recommended to use non-genetically modified, organic foods. Farmers' markets or cooperatives for biodynamic agriculture are a good option. Supermarkets also offer a wide range of organic products.

Histamine Intolerance and Weight Loss

However, histamine intolerance not only leads to weight gain but can also have the opposite effect. Visually, the body image in some cases resembles anorexia. In these cases, affected individuals often suffer from gastroenterological complaints such as mushy stools, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, or a feeling of fullness after eating.

On the one hand, frequent, softer bowel movements lead to the food, including nutrients, no longer being properly utilized; on the other hand, food intake automatically decreases due to the frequent complaints and the resulting loss of appetite.

The result is weight loss, which can vary in severity depending on the person. A low-histamine diet usually brings improvement, as digestion normalizes, meals are tolerated again, and appetite also increases. A dysbiosis of the gut flora, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), or leaky gut can also lead to reduced nutrient absorption and weight loss.

Histamine Intolerance and Overweight/Underweight — Our Conclusion

People tend to consume foods to which they are allergic because they are addictive. How is this possible? We develop binge eating because allergens promote addictive stress hormones. The same applies to histamine. Incorrectly, foods with a high histamine content are favored in this context.

These are usually foods high in sugar and fat, which can lead to weight gain. In addition, there are symptoms of histamine release such as water retention and swelling. However, with histamine intolerance, not only overweight or weight gain, but also underweight or weight loss is possible.

A low-histamine diet in combination with researching the causes is effective in both cases to avoid weight problems and other unwanted side effects of histaminosis.
