Cranberries and histamine – Do cranberries contain histamine?

In this article, we take a "histamine-friendly look" at cranberries. Cranberries are very tasty berries that can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen. But are cranberries suitable for a low-histamine diet, or do they fall into the category of high-histamine berries? We answer this question here.

Cranberries at a glance

Visually, cranberries look like XXL lingonberries. They come from North America and are also known in Germany as bog cranberries or cranberry bushes. Similar to blueberries or lingonberries, cranberries also belong to the heather family. Due to the citric acid they contain, they have a tart taste.

Season and storage of cranberries

The main season for cranberries runs from August to December, so they are typical autumn berries. They should be stored in the refrigerator, as they can spoil quickly at room temperature. However, cranberries can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 months without any problems, preferably in a resealable bag. The berries are also suitable for freezing, which can keep them fresh for about a year. Cranberries are mainly imported from the USA, where they grow on huge plantations in the North American forests. Nowadays, smaller plantations can also be found in Europe, for example in Germany or the Netherlands.

Cranberries in a low-histamine diet

Fortunately, cranberries are excellently suited for a low-histamine diet and can therefore be used perfectly in everyday cooking. Fresh cranberries also have a very good fructose/glucose ratio, so they are easily suitable for a low-fructose diet and are also excellently suited for a low-histamine diet despite the citric acid they contain.

Cranberries are suitable for a:

  • low-histamine diet
  • lactose-free diet
  • low-fructose diet
  • gluten-free diet
  • low-nickel diet

Cranberries are rather unsuitable for a:

  • low-salicylate diet
  • low-sorbitol diet

Cranberries in low-histamine cooking: shopping tips and processing

Good quality cranberries can be identified by their firm, plump, and shiny skin. Discolored, dull berries with whitish spots, as well as soft, shriveled, or damaged berries, are not recommended. In addition, organic quality should be considered.

Processing

Handling fresh cranberries is rather straightforward; they should simply be washed thoroughly and drained well. Due to their tart taste, they are excellently suited for savory dishes. However, cranberries also taste very good in their dried form. In a low-histamine diet, it is recommended to dry the berries yourself, as commercially available dried cranberries often contain additives such as sunflower oil.
