Apples and histamine: Are apples suitable for people with histamine intolerance?

Apples are extremely versatile: not only are there different varieties, but this popular fruit is also incredibly diverse in its preparation. We have a selection of apple juice, apple pie, applesauce, apple cider vinegar, and much more. But are the fruits suitable for a low-histamine diet?

Apples are a popular fruit, not least because they are often grown regionally. The ecological footprint of apples is therefore usually small. The crunchy fruits come in sweet or tart varieties, in yellow, red, or green colors. Apples are versatile and suitable for recipes such as apple fritters, baked apples, chutney, or jam. But are they also suitable for a low-histamine diet?

What influence do secondary plant compounds have?

Apples are rich in secondary plant compounds (polyphenols). These have a positive effect on the human body: they

  • contribute to reduced LDL oxidation.
  • contribute to an antioxidant effect.
  • contribute to protection against bacteria.
  • contribute to the protection of blood vessels.
  • contribute to protection against ionizing and UV radiation.
  • contribute to protection against free radicals.
  • contribute to protection against inflammation.
  • contribute to the reduction of histamine.

Do apples contain histamine?

Apples contain only a small amount of histamine and other biogenic amines and are, in contrast to pears, suitable for a low-histamine diet. They also do not act as histamine liberators, which would mean that the human body itself produces histamine after consumption. Pure apple juice is generally well tolerated on a low-histamine diet. The storage time should always be kept in mind, because the longer the storage, the higher the histamine content. For dried apple rings, personal tolerance level must be observed.

In addition to apples, there are many other foods that are well suited for a low-histamine diet. With our HistaStarter Set, you will get to know a selection of our most popular organic products and discover delicious alternatives for a varied diet.

Applesauce and Histamine Content

Applesauce is also generally well tolerated on a low-histamine diet. However, it should be ensured that no additives or citric acid are included. The best option is 100 percent apple puree without sugar and of organic quality. After opening, the jar should be consumed quickly, otherwise the histamine content increases. Of course, you can also easily make applesauce yourself.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Histamine Intolerance

Apple cider vinegar, along with other vinegars, is best suited for a low-histamine diet. The histamine content of apple cider vinegar is 20 μg. For comparison:

  • Table vinegar contains 500 μg and
  • Red wine vinegar (Balsamic) up to 4000 μg.

It is also advisable to avoid pickled, preserved vegetables in vinegar marinades such as gherkins or mixed pickles. Furthermore, individual tolerance limits should always be observed, as vinegar is generally considered to be rather poorly tolerated.

Caution with Cross-Allergies

While apples have the potential to be anti-allergenic because the polyphenols they contain inhibit histamine formation, they are also attributed with an allergenic potential. Pollen allergy sufferers who react to birch pollen, for example, need to be careful. They may have an allergic reaction to apples in the case of a cross-allergy. A cross-allergy requires sensitization to a substance. The triggers are similar or identical structures of the allergy sources, so-called epitopes. As with all allergic reactions, the body releases histamine in such a case, which can be problematic for someone with histamine symptoms.

INFO: If you cannot tolerate apples with histamine symptoms, a cross-allergy may be the cause. In this case, you should have the symptoms medically clarified. An allergist will perform a prick test on you.
