Chocolate and histamine: Is there any chocolate that is suitable for a low-histamine diet?

The mere thought of chocolate makes some people's mouths water. There is probably no other sweet with so many facets. But is it also suitable for a low-histamine diet?

Chocolate is probably the most versatile and popular sweet of all. There are varieties in white, milk, nougat, or dark chocolate. In addition to chocolate bars, chocolate-covered cookies, pralines, spreads, chocolate drinks, and much more are consumed. Depending on the cocoa and sugar content, the temptations vary in sweetness.

Why no chocolate if you suffer from histamine-related symptoms?

Chocolate itself contains very little histamine, provided no soy or other histamine-rich additives are included. However, like most nuts, the sweet treat contains other biogenic amines due to the cocoa, especially tyramine, phenylethylamine, and tryptamine. All biogenic amines require the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) to be broken down. People with histamine-related symptoms should therefore be careful when consuming chocolate. If they consume small amounts of histamine in addition to other biogenic amines, histamine can no longer be broken down properly because the enzyme is needed for the breakdown of other amines.

White chocolate and histamine

White chocolate is much better suited for a low-histamine diet. However, you should pay close attention to the list of ingredients. Only consume white chocolate

  • without cocoa, but with cocoa butter.
  • without histamine-rich additives such as soy or sunflower oil.
There are often also vegan alternatives without milk, which are usually better tolerated.
If you are looking for a delicious snack with vegan white "chocolate" for in between meals, our Organic Oat Bar could be just the thing for you. It is suitable for a low-histamine, low-fructose, gluten-free, and vegan diet and contains no unnecessary additives.

Dark chocolate and histamine

The higher the cocoa content in a chocolate, the higher the concentration of biogenic amines it contains. Dark chocolate is therefore considered a histamine liberator. Milk chocolate also contains a high proportion of biogenic amines.

Chocolate: Intolerance and symptoms

After consuming milk or dark chocolate, histamine-related symptoms may occur. Even when consuming white chocolate, the personal tolerance limit should always be observed. Also make sure that no incompatible nuts are included. Almonds are usually well tolerated, but even here, an individual tolerance limit should not be disregarded.

We believe that enjoyment and everyday life should go hand in hand despite histamine intolerance. For special occasions or meals that cannot be completely low in histamine, we have developed our DaoFit.
