Flaxseed in a low-histamine diet
Flaxseeds contain many important nutrients. They are considered an ideal source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially for vegan and vegetarian diets. But are flaxseeds also suitable for a low-histamine diet?
Flaxseeds: How to integrate them into your diet?
The cultivated flax plant, also known as linseed, comes from the Linaceae family and is used for textile production. Its name is derived from the Latin term Linum usitatissimum L., the middle word of which means "most useful." Flax is among the oldest plants cultivated by humanity and, according to researchers, was used for the production of clothing over 20,000 years ago. From the 20th century onwards, flax was largely replaced by cotton production. In recent years, however, flax has been making a comeback.
Are flaxseeds healthy?
The seed of the flax plant is flat, narrowly pointed, smooth, and very shiny. Its coloring ranges from yellowish to brown in various shades. The Linum usitatissimum capsule usually contains 10 fully developed flaxseeds. These are used in folk medicine because the valuable ingredients are found within the flaxseed or in the seed coat:
- Dietary fiber (approx. 25%)
- Proteins (approx. 25%)
- Mucilage (mainly the sugars galactose, galacturonic acid, and xylose)
-
Fatty oils (approx. 30-45% linoleic, linolenic, and oleic acid)

Linolenic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid and is found in this concentration in almost no other plant. It is therefore considered an optimal source of omega-3 fatty acids for vegetarians and vegans. Flaxseed oil is also a popular product in vegetarian and vegan diets.
Flaxseed digestion
The mucilage contained in flaxseeds binds water in the intestinal tract, causing the seeds to swell. This increases the intestinal volume, and the oil accelerates the emptying of the bowel contents, which is why flaxseeds are often used as a supportive aid for digestion.
Eating flaxseeds
Flaxseeds can be integrated into many dishes, for example in bread, muesli, porridge, cakes, smoothies, or bowls. It is recommended to consume 2 to 3 tablespoons of flaxseeds daily, which should be taken with sufficient water so that the intestines do not become blocked.
Ground flaxseeds
The hard shell of flaxseeds is very difficult to break down in the gastrointestinal tract, which makes it difficult for the nutrients to take effect. Ground flaxseeds are therefore the most suitable choice. These are already available ground in retail stores. You can, of course, also grind them yourself. During this process, the exquisite oil is released and can be better utilized by your body.
