Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) and histamine intolerance
As often mentioned, histamine intolerance is usually a consequence of dysregulation within the body. The triggers for this can be multifaceted. Typical causes include, for example, hormonal imbalance, an imbalance in the gut, liver overload, chronic illnesses, or increased stress.
However, there are also causes that only become apparent at second or third glance. One such example is CMD (craniomandibular dysfunction).
What is CMD?
CMD refers to disorders of the normal muscle or joint function of the masticatory system, which can occur individually or in various combinations (*1):
- Disorder of the masticatory muscles
- Disorder of the temporomandibular joints
- Occlusal dysfunction: The upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly
A malalignment of the jaw can, among other things, lead to an unstable cervical spine (*2). Conversely, trauma to the cervical spine can also lead to CMD.
According to estimates, about 15 percent of adult Germans are affected by CMD requiring treatment (*1)
What symptoms are typical for CMD?
Typical symptoms of CMD include, for example (*1):
- Restricted movement in the head and neck area
- Severe tension or pain in the face, neck, shoulders, and back
- Headaches
- Earaches
- Tinnitus
- Dizziness
- Pressure behind the eyes
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Audible clicking and grating of the temporomandibular joints
- Gastrointestinal problems
- And much more.

Diagnosis of CMD
To find out if you are affected by CMD, the following diagnostic options are available:
- A detailed consultation with an orthodontist (CMD specialist)
- A functional analysis of jaw opening, masticatory muscles, and temporomandibular joints by a dentist, orthopedist, physiotherapist, etc.
Treatment of CMD
The good news: therapy is usually possible! For example, with (*1):
- A bite splint from an orthodontist (CMD specialist)
- Physiotherapy
- Osteopathy
The normal function of our muscles also relies on an adequate supply of certain nutrients. Magnesium contributes, among other things, to normal muscle function and the normal function of the nervous system. Our MagnesiumFit combines three selected magnesium compounds in a vegan capsule for this purpose.

Histamine Intolerance and CMD
Due to the repeated mechanical friction of a misaligned jaw and, consequently, the cervical vertebrae, chronic inflammation of the nerves can occur, which can then promote the rise of histamine in the head and body. This leads to sympathetic stress, which in turn can activate the same nerves and promote the release of histamine (*2). A vicious circle, then, that needs to be broken!
This cycle applies not only to CMD, but to many unexplained pains, such as:
- Spinal pain
- Joint and muscle pain
- Psoriasis or neurodermatitis
- Migraines
- Inflammation in the mouth and throat area

Nitric oxide also plays an important role in the connection between CMD and HIT. Due to chronic inflammation, nitric oxide is present in the body in excess. So much so that it cannot be properly broken down and therefore binds with proteins, especially in joints. Furthermore, nitric oxide ensures that histamine production is stimulated.
