AIP, Paleo diet and histamine intolerance

When you experience symptoms like headaches or fatigue, allergies or autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis, your body is almost certainly telling you that something is wrong. There is a high probability that there is an imbalance in your metabolic system. AIP may offer a potential solution here. You can read more about what that means here.

What does AIP mean?

AIP stands for Autoimmune Protocol and refers to a very strict form of the Paleo diet, also known as the Stone Age diet. This way of eating is intended to support those affected by autoimmune diseases, intolerances, and various health problems such as headaches, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues, and to help improve symptoms. The main goal is to figure out which foods are good for your body and which should be avoided in order to unburden your metabolism.

What is a Paleo diet?

The Paleo diet is based on foods from the Stone Age, meaning that only natural, unprocessed foods are consumed as part of this nutritional approach. During this phase, you should avoid sugar, processed foods, grains, dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, and margarine. Instead, you can incorporate more meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, as well as healthy fats and oils into your diet. You can read more about which foods are suitable further down in this blog post.

How does the Autoimmune Protocol work?

First of all, it is important to note that the AIP diet is not intended for long-term use, but only for a specific period. For at least 30 days, in addition to the foods already excluded in the Paleo diet, you should also avoid gluten- and lectin-containing foods as well as foods with allergenic potential.

Once you have strictly followed the AIP for 30 days and notice an improvement, you can slowly begin to reintroduce new foods. Due to the restriction of many food items, you should not follow the AIP diet for longer than 90 days.

  • Dairy products
  • Legumes

Which foods are suitable for AIP?

  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli

The connection between the Autoimmune Protocol and histamine intolerance

The AIP diet can support you with your histaminosis for the following reasons:

  1. AIP completely avoids pro-inflammatory foods that can irritate the gut.
  2. You can give your body and metabolism time to regenerate and "breathe" by avoiding specific triggers.
  3. Leaky gut is a common cause of histamine intolerance. By following the Autoimmune Protocol for at least 30 to a maximum of 90 days, you can relieve your intestinal mucosa and support its regeneration. Due to the restriction of many foods, you should not follow the AIP diet for longer than 90 days without the guidance of a doctor or therapist. In general, it is advisable not to undertake this type of diet on your own, but rather with the help of experts and proper instructions.
